Designing to Change Behavior: Review

Here are some design tips that I have learned from the article “Designing to Change Behavior”:

– To encourage a behavior, emphasize associated gains rather than associated losses

– To discourage a behavior, associate additional losses with the undesirable option

– Make multiple losses less daunting by coupling them together

– Make multiple gains more pleasurable by separating them conceptually and temporarily (if possible)

– To encourage people to select a specific option, make it the default (and vice versa)

– To encourage people to select a particular option, or engage in a positive behavior, where positive outcomes are delayed, introduce present benefits to make the desired outcome more appealing

– To encourage people to select a particular option, or engage in a behavior that is associated with a loss, delay the losses so that they occur in the future
